JH&A Advertising Celebrates 20th Anniversary

JH&A Advertising today marks it's 20 th anniversary as an independent, locally owned marketing communications and public relations agency.   The agency has quietly built an enviable reputation serving an impressive client roster from its South Austin headquarters.   What began 20-years ago as an offshoot of Service Printing has grown into a powerhouse boutique agency providing strategic, integrated communications services to the likes of Dell, 3M, Buffalo Technology, Silicon Labs, Dynamic Systems, Wilsonart and others.

The JH&A story began back in the early 1960's when founder John Hamm took an apprenticeship under his father, who owned and operated Austin-based Service Typesetting. Over time, Service Typesetting evolved into Service Printing, operating as a large commercial printer for a number of years.  

In 1986, Hamm decided to break from the printing business and its investors to spin the firm's burgeoning design shop into an independent entity: JH&A Advertising.   The firm enjoyed immediate success working with clients like 3M, ArtCarved and the Charter Lane family of hospitals.  

JH&A bolstered its client roster and professional staff by acquiring Tessar Communications in 1988, a young but fast-growing agency headed by Patrick Cline.   The addition of Cline's industry experience and client roster led to a decade of steady growth serving clients including USAA, SRI Sports (Astroturf), Micheal Angelo Foods, AMD, National Telecom, Dell and other enterprise-level global corporations along with a healthy portfolio of local and regional clients.

The tech slowdown of 1999-2000 and terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 delivered a one-two punch that reverberated across Austin's agency landscape, prompting a string of mergers, acquisitions and bankruptcies.   JH&A maintained its independence and thrived largely due to a steady flow of work from its well-established client base.

Over the years, JH&A has won numerous awards for print advertising, Web design, flash animation, print collateral and direct mail.   Recent Awards include an SIAA Gold Medal in direct mail for Viagen, and a Silver Medal in the collateral family category for non-profit Wild Basin Preserve. ADscore and Harvey Research awarded JH&A's collateral, POS and print ads for Wilsonart with top scores for advertising effectiveness.   And the firm's whimsical flash animation 'unWired Buyer Saves the Day' introducing software for e-Bay power shoppers earned a Silver Medal at the Summit Creative Awards.

JH&A has leveraged its strong portfolio and the recovering economy into steady but cautious growth, refining its trademark high-touch approach to integrated advertising, marketing communications and public relations along the way.   Today, JH&A provides full-service promotional campaigns to clients in technology, heavy industry, consumer products, construction, and other competitive business sectors.
